The Tuscaloosa Art Exhibit!

If you follow me on Facebook, Twitter, G+, or, well, anywhere, I am sure you have seen me talking about the big art exhibit I was working on, where I was taking the drawing of a monster by a first grader from Tuscaloosa schools and converting it into my medium (fabric).

I was lucky enough to get a drawing from Eve, 6 years old, of three monsters. Here is what she wrote about her monsters:

"My monsters names are Bloodsucker, Killer and Death. They live in this town called Death. Two of them are related but they just met. Killer eats people, Bloodsucker is a vampire, and Death is a zombie. They are all related and they swim and eat people."

I absolutely loved her drawing and was so excited to recreate them. It was like instant inspiration! I think I was most excited about the fact that these and the other artist's work will be auctioned off at the art exhibit, and the proceeds from all of the art pieces will go to the Tuscaloosa schools for art supplies! How great is that?!

I started on them a few days after I got the picture, after I gathered up all the supplies for them. I started with Killer! My only regret is the fabric for Killer's head didn't hold it's shape quite as well as I had hope, and it wasn't as round-ish as the drawing (and if we are being honest, he came out kind of short), but I think he still came out pretty awesome, none-the-less!

After Killer, I worked on Death. He proved to be the most challenging, but that was my fault. I was over thinking his shape, and made a snip in the wrong place, and totally ruined the first one I made so I had to start all over again. The second Death came out way better though so no complaints. :)

I saved Bloodsucker for last. I really, really loved his design and wanted to savor working on it. (weird, I know, haha! What can I say, Eve is a master monster creator!).

I am super excited to see them on exhibit - though, I will have to live vicariously through my friend Megean, who will be attending the event, since Trace insists 18 hours is too far of a drive for an art exhibit, even though it's my first ever art exhibit I have participated in. :P The event-holders have books made, featuring the child's art work on one page and the artist recreation on the opposite page, and I will definitely be ordering one (or ten) of those. ;) If you are in Tuscaloosa (or within reasonable driving distance) be sure to keep an eye on my media pages for event details as soon as they go up! :D It's a great benefit with over 20 artists participating! Monsters for art supplies, support it! ♥
